Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the UK—but a new report from England’s Health Ombudsman reveals that the NHS is consistently falling short when it comes to diagnosing and treating stroke patients.

Despite decades of progress and clear treatment guidelines, the reality today is worrying: delays in diagnosis, long ambulance waits, poor access to specialists, and inconsistent aftercare are costing lives and livelihoods.

🧾 What the Watchdog Found

According to the Ombudsman’s report (July 2025), the NHS is "repeatedly failing" stroke patients in the following ways:

  • Only 46.6% of patients are admitted to a specialist stroke unit within 4 hours — far below the target and crucial time window for treatment.

  • Stroke-related complaints rose by 25% in the last four years. Investigations into poor care increased by 65%.

  • Failures include missed or delayed diagnoses, poor communication, and lack of coordinated rehabilitation.
